16-year old Ennis has signed for Manchester United after turning down a scholarship deal with Liverpool following the expiration of his youth contract as a star in their academy
Not many footballers make the bold move to leave Liverpool to join Manchester United – but 16-year-old Ethan Ennis has done just that.
The teenager has signed for the Red Devils after rejecting a new contract with the Merseyside club.
Liverpool were keen to keep hold of their talented attacking midfielder and offered him a scholarship deal this summer.
Ennis rejected the proposal and was then free to join a number of interested clubs.
He was eyed by Chelsea, according to the Liverpool Echo, but chose the Anfield side’s north west rivals, becoming one of many coveted youngsters to head to Old Trafford in recent years.
Ennis even took a trip to the Blues’ Cobham training ground this summer, as revealed on his Instagram.
The starlet confirmed the transfer on Tuesday by posting photographs of himself at the stadium on social media.
His caption read: “I am delighted to announce that I have signed for Manchester United.
“Grateful for this opportunity, can’t wait to get started.”
Subsequently, Liverpool are now owed a development fee for their lost prodigy, a statute of the English game which allows the club who honed a talent to receive some benefit.
It could be decided by a tribunal if the two clubs fail to reach an agreement.
So who exactly is Ennis?
He broke into the club’s Under-18 setup over the course of the last campaign and scored five goals in eight games.
He then went on to help Liverpool to the prestigious FA Youth Cup final and racked up three strikes in that competition for Marc Bridge-Wilkinson’s side before losing out to Aston Villa at the last hurdle.
In the first round, a tie against Sutton, the teenager came off the bench to score a 15-minute hat-trick, netting his first inside six minutes of entering the fray.
Boss Bridge-Wilkinson – who notably starred for Port Vale, Bradford City and Carlisle United in his playing days – said post-match: “Ethan is an Under-16 player and it was a great evening for him.
“It was his debut in the FA Youth Cup and he got three goals!

“What a wonderful achievement for him and he went on and did what I ask our subs to do: have an impact on the game,” he added.
“He arrived in great areas which forward players do and his finishing was really good.”
From highlights, Ennis’ natural ability on the ball looks to be of an elite standard for his age.
His second-striker/attacking midfield role allows him to unlock defences with his passing and still show an eye for goal, which is certainly not in doubt thanks to his impressive record.
10 fellow Anfield youngsters opted to sign their first-year scholar terms, including highly-rated trio Kaide Gordon, Stefan Bajcetic and Calum Scanlon.
Gordon played 45 minutes against Bundesliga side Mainz in Austria last Friday as Jurgen Klopp takes a look at the forward in pre-season.
The last senior player to move from one of the clubs to another was back in 1964 when Phil Chisnall moved from United to Liverpool for £25,000.
Only nine players in history have transferred directly across the M62.
Klopp will take his side to Manchester in October before welcoming Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and co in March.
