Printing calendars yourself – Which paper is suitable?
Before you start designing your calendar, you should think about the right paper. Often the choice of paper does not depend on its properties, but on your personal preferences.
Basically, you can use conventional standard paper that you buy in the supermarket or drugstore. The cost of such paper is quite low and you can even accept a misprint once in a while. If you decide to use standard paper, you should still pay attention to the quality.
Cheap paper in particular can be the wrong choice. When printing, the paper and its surface can be a source of errors. Especially if fine paper dust comes off and thus not only affects the print result, but also soils the machine.
So it is all the better to choose standard paper of grade 1 or A. This has a clean cut edge. This has a clean cut edge and a smooth surface that does not “peel off” during printing. calendar printer
If you want a more classy holiday calendar, then you should go for photo paper. Photo paper is much more expensive, but also fancier. The smooth, glossy surface is ideal for printing a calendar yourself. The best thing to do is to print on standard paper beforehand so that you can see how your calendar looks. If it meets all your requirements, such as holiday density, wallpaper and portrait or landscape format, you can then print the calendar on photo paper.
A small disadvantage of this type of paper is that the lettering can be difficult in some cases. Conventional felt-tip pens do not stick well.
If you want a calendar that has several pages and enough space for entries, you should use paper with a binding. This paper has special holes in which you can later insert a suitable binding. This paper is ideal for calendars in book form. Of course, you can simply use a hole punch, but binding paper is much more elegant.
Making your own calendar on the PC with the “Annual Calendar” software
The easiest and quickest way is to use the “Jahreskalender” programme. You can download it free of charge, and there are numerous templates available for you on the manufacturer’s website. For “Jahreskalender” you need Word or Excel.
The instructions for making your own calendar now show you the individual steps when you work with “Jahreskalender” and Excel. Before doing so, you should bear in mind that there are two restrictions for private users in the free version: A programme information is inserted in the header of the calendar, which you cannot remove. Likewise, a copyright message is displayed when you open the workbook. Otherwise, you can start creating the calendar.
Step 1: Activate macros
In order to use “Annual Calendar”, you must activate the macros in Excel. These are deactivated by default for security reasons. To activate them, click on “Macro” in the “Tools” menu and then on the “Security” submenu.
In the dialogue window, select the security level “Medium” and confirm your selection with “OK”. To make the change effective, you must restart the programme. To do this, simply close the Excel spreadsheet and then open the file “Calendar-Excel-8.7”. Now click on “Activate macros” in the “Security warning” dialogue box. Then start the “Annual calendar”.
Step 2: Licence notice and terms of use
As soon as you start the programme, a dialogue box will open with information on the licence conditions. You can close the window by clicking on “OK”.
Creating a calendar with “Jahreskalender” is child’s play. You only have to follow the individual steps of the programme and thus work through the given “checklist”. First, click on the “Terms of use” button.
Here you will receive free information about the licences. After clicking on “To the overview” you will return to the main window.
Step 3: Select state
You should be aware that school holidays and other public holidays do not fall on the same day in every federal state. If you have now edited a list item, a tick appears in the box in front of it. As soon as the entire list is ticked, the programme has the information it needs to generate your calendar.
You can now select your federal state from the drop-down menu. The programme will then automatically take over the corresponding public holidays and holiday dates.
Step 4: Adjust public holidays
Click on the “Holidays” button to edit free dates. You will now see a table in which all German public holidays are displayed. In the “Holidays” column you can see whether the day is a day of rest in your federal state or not.
You can now match the “Display” column with the “Holidays” column so that only those days are displayed in your calendar when you really have time off. Below there are some blank lines where you can enter your own dates. For example, foreign public holidays. Once you have made all the settings, click on the “To overview” field to return to the main menu.
Step 5: Check holiday dates
Click on “School holidays” to check the holiday dates. The holiday dates for your federal state should already be entered. Check the dates here and make changes if necessary. If you want to insert holiday dates from other federal states, you have to click on “Look up holidays…”. In the drop-down menu, select the desired federal state and click on “Insert”. Now the corresponding data will be imported into your table.
Step 6: Insert anniversaries and birthdays
Your table should now contain the holiday and public holiday entries. Use the empty rows to insert new dates. For example, you can type in birthdays, anniversaries, wedding day or other important dates.
Then click on “Check”. If there are any errors in your entries, a warning message will appear. If the entries are correct, click on “To overview” to return to the main menu.
You also have the option of importing birthdays from Outlook. To do this, click on “Import…” and select “Outlook” from the list. Then search for the CSV file that you previously exported from Outlook. Click on “OK” to view the appointments and insert them into the table.
Step 7: Insert recurring events
Every month you go to the cinema with your friends or every other week there is an important event that you should not miss? When creating your own calendar, you can also insert recurring events using “Cyclical entries”.
Fill out your table and use the various options when creating the recurring events. This allows you to specify the event duration and expiry date. You can also determine how Sundays and public holidays are handled. Click on “Check entries” again to correct any input errors.
Step 8: Generate calendar
Once you are satisfied with the template, you can finally move on to the final step. To do this, click on “Generate calendar”. In the drop-down menu “Scheme” you can select the desired format, such as landscape or portrait.
Likewise, you can determine how the months and days are arranged on the page. Click on “OK” to start creating your calendar. Now all you have to do is print your calendar yourself and the whole process is finished.
Other programmes for printing calendars yourself
There is a large selection of programmes on the Internet that you can use as alternatives. Please note that most of these programmes are only intended for the production of a personal organizer. You will not find any other options, but you can quickly create a calendar yourself without needing any special knowledge.
Just make sure that the programme you choose suits your needs and is free to download.

You can determine the arrangement of the months, customise the colours and add individual holidays or public holidays if you wish.
Perpetual Calendar: The programme with the simple name “Perpetual Calendar” is ideal if you want to quickly create an appointment planner in the form of an Excel workbook. You can enter dates such as birthdays, holidays, working days and the like in the spreadsheet.
You can choose to print out the annual overview on one or two pages. In addition to the weekdays, , also shows the calendar weeks and the individual public holidays. Of course, these can be imported depending on the federal state.
Photo calendar: On the manufacturer’s web platform you can easily design your individual photo calendar online. Various templates are available if you want to print your calendar yourself.
You simply upload individual pictures and graphics via the web app. If the result is satisfactory, you can download your “photo calendar” via the download link. It arrives by e-mail or in PDF format.
