SURPRISE, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) – A suspect is in custody after one person was killed and 12 others were injured in eight different locations throughout West Valley cities in the Phoenix metropolitan area on Thursday.

According to Peoria police, out of the 13 victims injured in the shooting incidents, 4 people were struck by a bullet. The 9 other victims were injured in the shooting incidents but not physically shot. One person, who was found shot in a drainage ditch along the Loop 101 and Thunderbird Road in Peoria, has been pronounced dead. The entire incident took place over an hour and a half, police said.

The first known shooting happened in the area of 103rd and Northern avenues around 11:10 a.m. when Peoria police were called to a shooting and found a person in a car that had been shot. That victim and a witness gave officers a description of the suspect vehicle and license plate. Officers began looking for a white Volkswagen Tiguan seen leaving the scene.

Residents shaken up after hearing about shootings

As officers were investigating the first shooting, numerous other reports of shootings were coming into dispatchers in Peoria Police Department, Surprise Police Department, Maricopa County Sherriff’s Office and the Department of Public Safety. Police say a total of eight shooting locations have been tied to the suspect.

  • Loop 303 / Happy Valley Road

After a suspect description was issued to agencies across the Valley, around 12:42 p.m. Surprise Fire-Medical Department employee found the suspect vehicle in the area of 147th and Grand avenues. The employee called Surprise Police who stopped the vehicle and took the suspect, an adult man, into custody. A weapon was located on scene, police say.

Peoria police provide information about shooting spree suspect that left 13 injured in multiple incidents Thursday.







ADOT says the Loop 101 was closed at Grand Avenue due to the ongoing investigations. The on-ramps from Lake Pleasant, Lone Mountain, and Happy Valley parkways were also closed. They have since reopened. For the latest traffic conditions, click here.

Peoria police says their department will be the lead agency conducting the investigation with the help of other local, state, and federal agencies. This is a complex, ongoing investigation that will take a significant amount of time.
